Launch of E10 petrol planned for 2011 in Finland – New Petrol Suitable for Most Passenger Cars

Combating against the climate change, Finland is determined to increase the share of biofuels in road transport in line with the EU resolutions. As from January 2011, the E10 petrol with up to 10 percent v/v ethanol will be the standard petrol quality in Finland provided that the necessary law reforms are finalized in time.

According to a study conducted by the automobile importers, the new petrol will be compatible with a great majority of the passenger vehicles driven in Finland. The current type of motor petrol will continue to be available for the older vehicles not compatible with E10. The newer the vehicle, the more likely it is to be E10 compatible. Over 70 percent of the passenger cars registered in Finland will be compatible with the new E10 petrol.

The Association of Automobile Importers in Finland (Autotuojat ry) has put together a comprehensive information package on E10 compatibility with the car makes and models imported by its member companies. It lists the vehicles known to be compatible with E10 petrol as their primary fuel in continuous use. The precondition for E10 compatibility always is, however, that all fuel system parts of the vehicle are of OEM or equivalent quality. The listing can be found on the newly launched website at www.E10bensiini.fi.

The upcoming changes in the fuel assortment warrant attention and care: the ultimate responsibility for choosing the correct petrol at each and every refill lies with the individual motorist. If uncertainty exists concerning the suitability of E10 petrol with a particular vehicle make or model, the car owner is urged to turn to the relevant authorized car dealer in the first instance, or to the importer – as the secondary option – for further advice.

Should a non-E10 compatible petrol driven car accidentally be refuelled with E10, there is no need to empty the fuel tank as there is no immediate danger of engine damage. It is recommended, however, that the vehicle is refuelled with the correct fuel as soon as one third or one half of the fuel mixture in the tank has been used up. It is possible that the vehicle’s winter start-up and driveability may be temporarily deteriorated following the erroneous refuel with E10 petrol.

Suitable and safe petrol available for all

Under the biofuels obligation scheme, all transport fuel distribution companies operating in Finland must supply a certain amount of biofuels either blended in petrol and diesel or as such. Presently in 2010, the petrol marketed in Finland contains up to 5% v/v bioethanol or a corresponding proportion of ethers. The EU Fuel Quality Directive (FQD) and the Renewable Energy Directive (RED) imply in practice that in the future, new petrol qualities will be introduced in the markets with ethanol concentrations higher than today.

In January 2011, the marketing of the new the E10 petrol with up to 10 percent v/v ethanol will commence in Finland, provided that the necessary law reforms are completed. The increase of the bio-component content will help reduce carbon dioxide emissions from road vehicles.

Suitable and safe petrol grades will continue to be available for all vehicles. As from January 2011, the service stations will distribute the 95 E10 with up to 10% v/v ethanol as their basic petrol, but also the 98 E5 with up to 5% v/v ethanol will be available.

New E10 website launched

A new website offers advice on E10 and contains a listing of its suitability for various car makes and models. The site can be found at www.E10bensiini.fi. The car importers will update the listing as they have new compatibility data concerning cars currently not included in the listing.

The website compiled by Motiva Oy jointly with the Finnish automobile and oil industries contains information in Finnish, Swedish and English, including frequently asked questions (FAQ) on E10 petrol.
